Have you ever dreamt about seeing majestic icebergs? We will tell you a secret – to experience Antarctica style landscapes, you don’t have to spend a fortune and travel thousands of miles. They are closer than you can imagine, awaiting you in Iceland. Let us take you to a really special, outstanding place called Jökulsárlón.
This magical and amazing place is situated just next to the Ring Road, which is the main road that goes around Iceland. For sure your eyes will get larger because in one moment you will see a piece of magic. Imagine a dramatic view of a monumental glacier and slowly drifting icebergs in front of it. Sometimes they are deep blue, sometimes become pure crystal and other times snow-white with raven-black patterns. And there are literally hundreds of them in different shapes and sizes! There’s no other way – this view will leave you truly amazed and just speechless.
Jökulsárlón means ‘glacier lagoon’ and it’s a combination of two Icelandic words: jökull – glacier and lón – lagoon. It is a quite young place. Everything started in 1933/34 when climate started to warm up. Just fifty years ago glacier tongues were touching today’s lagoon shore! Year after year the glacier was getting smaller, it was moving backwards about 100 metres each year. After all these years a huge ice lagoon came into being, and it is still getting larger and larger.
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a very famous and popular place. Once even James Bond paid a visit to the lagoon, driving in his fancy car between the icebergs in Die Another Day. Icelanders and visitors truly love Jökulsárlón, so sometimes it can be overcrowded. But there is a solution if you want to have more private and romantic meeting as we had. Our advice for enjoying this place without witnesses is – go there very early in the morning or very late in the evening or even at night. Remember that in June and July it doesn’t get dark here in Iceland even late at night.
When we arrived at Jökulsárlón, it was unbelievably warm and sunny. Weather like this doesn’t happen so often in this part of Iceland. The lagoon put a spell on us – the icebergs were glittering like diamonds. If you are lucky you will meet one of the lagoon cute inhabitants – there are many seals living there! We were really happy to see them playing carefree just near the shore. Our visit was so wonderful and yours will be too. Even if you aren’t so lucky with the weather as we were, we can tell you one thing – Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon looks truly amazing even in bad weather. It’s definitely on the must-see list, so don’t hesitate – go and visit Jökulsárlón!
